Acura RDX is More Than an Errand-Runner
If you’re looking at the 2018 Acura RDX and thinking it is a run-of-the-mill family SUV, think again. U.S. News and World Report ranked the 2018 Acura RDX No. 1 in Luxury Compact SUVs. The same publication also ranked the RDX as 2018’s Best Luxury Compact SUV for the Money. For many, these are reason enough to find an Acura dealer near them to see what all the talk is about.
The Acura RDX has available seating for five passengers and adequate storage for whatever your cargo needs, whether you’re shopping or traveling. The RDX comes standard with a front-wheel drivetrain, but an all-wheel drivetrain is an available option. Let’s look at some additional features and options that make this SUV a multifaceted vehicle.
High-End Standard Features
The 2018 Acura RDX comes with the kinds of standard features that are typically limited to available options on most vehicle models.
If you live in a part of the country known for cold temperatures, you will especially appreciate the fact that the RDX comes with heated front seats. Speaking of seating, the RDX comes standard with a 10-way power-adjustable driver seat.
Anyone familiar with an SUV knows the key to loading and unloading is making sure you are able to open and close the tailgate. Acura realized this potential concern as well. The 2018 RDX comes standard with a power tailgate that provides several different ways to activate this feature.
The RDX tailgate can be opened and closed from the key fob—simply press the key fob button to open the tailgate. When you need to close it, press the tailgate button on the key fob again. The tailgate can also be opened and closed via a dashboard button or a button near the tailgate handle. As a safety precaution, the tailgate will automatically reverse its process if it encounters an obstruction.
The 2018 RDX comes standard with a multiview rear camera. When the RDX drives in reverse, the rear camera provides drivers with three different angles, allowing them to select the view that best meets their needs to maneuver within the situation most effectively. The system is designed to automatically produce a wider angle if the driver is backing out of a parking spot.
The latest edition of the RDX features Jewel Eye LED headlights. Each headlight panel is made up of five low-profile LED lights for a total of 10 individual LED lights in both headlights. Acura refers to this technology as Jewel Eye Illumination, and it’s designed to mimic natural sunlight. The statement headlights are complemented by LED taillamps.
To top things off, there are few features that make a statement like a moonroof, which the RDX comes with as standard equipment.
The 2018 Acura RDX comes standard with the 3.5-liter Intelligent Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (i-VTEC) engine. The engine is configured to open and shut the intake and exhaust valves in a variable-timing manner consistent with the SUV’s rpm level. The result is an engine designed to maximize performance and fuel efficiency while reducing emissions.
The refined Variable Cylinder Management System also plays an essential role in the engine’s performance optimization. The VCM system is designed to reduce the number of cylinders actively working from six to three when the vehicle is in cruising mode on the highway.
According to tests, the engine’s maximum power output is an impressive 279 horsepower, and it exerts 252 lb-ft of torque.
The Acura’s high-performing engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift paddle shifters. This transmission configuration gives drivers the ability to select Drive or Sport mode. Drive mode ensures smooth gear transition, while Sport mode tunes the drivetrain for faster acceleration. Factoring in the use of the paddle shifters while in Drive mode provides drivers with faster sport tuned gear-shifting. Once the vehicle returns to a steady speed, the transmission transitions back to automatic mode. Using the paddle shifters in Sport mode instantaneously gives the driver complete control because the transmission transitions to manual mode and remains in that mode.
Consistent with Acura’s history of effectively using technology, the manufacturer provides drivers with state-of-the-art safety features in the 2018 RDX. Here are several key available features.
Vehicle Stability Assist provides drivers with much-needed help when navigating unstable and unsafe road conditions, such as a slick, rainy surface. When the vehicle detects adverse road conditions, the RDX can individually apply the brakes to each wheel and reduce engine power. The goal is to assist the driver in maintaining control to safely move across or through these dangerous surfaces
The Blind Spot Information System is, for the most part, self-explanatory. When driving 20 mph or faster, drivers are alerted to vehicles in their blind spots when attempting to make a turn or transition to another lane. The system uses both audible and visual notifications to alert the driver regarding any blind spot concerns.
When attempting to park, with the help of radar, Front and Rear Parking Assist alerts drivers when they are nearing objects that may impede the parking process. The result is that the driver is able to safely park without colliding with any nearby objects, including other parked vehicles.
Accessorize to Customize
The 2018 Acura RDX offers drivers accessories that can be used to further customize their SUV.
If drivers or their passengers need assistance in accessing or exiting the RDX’s cabin space, the SUV can be accessorized with Sport Running Boards.
And if you need to conceal anything, such as shopping bags or luggage, in the RDX cargo space, you can add a custom cargo cover to that storage area.
The extent to which the 2018 Acura RDX exceeds the standards ordinary SUVs aim for goes well beyond what’s covered in this discussion. We’ve reviewed what Acura refers to as the Standard Package, but there are three additional packages available that can be used to customize the RDX further. Acura refers to those options as the Acura Watch Plus, Technology, and Advance packages.
With all its available features and options, it’s easy to see how the 2018 Acura RDX can be used to take care of day-to-day tasks, such as grocery shopping, but this luxury SUV can also be used to take a once-in-a-lifetime road trip or a much-needed family vacation.
Don’t just settle for this article as proof of the Acura RDX’s capability, though—head over to your nearest Acura dealership and experience it for yourself.
